Multi-Agent AGV Fleet Optimization
Introduction
In high-volume logistics hubs, parcels that are irregular or cannot travel on the conveyor have to be moved by Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs). As fleet density grows on shared routes and drop-off points, conventional rule-based heuristics often fail to handle the dynamic interactions between vehicles, which leads to congestion and throughput bottlenecks.
The challenge was to synchronize a large fleet of AGVs dispatched from several docks. A static schedule was not enough to handle the stochastic release of parcels and the variations in traffic in real time.
Methodology
The solution was a prescriptive engine based on mathematical optimization, which manages the movements of the fleet as a whole rather than vehicle by vehicle. The engine recalibrates the schedule periodically from real-time vehicle data and the demand at the loading stations.
- Discovery and constraint mapping: we defined the limits of the operation, including physical traffic limitations, docking priorities and data latency constraints.
- EDA and data schema definition: we analyzed the historical data to identify the variables that matter for scheduling. We set up a formal data schema to represent the facility topology and the vehicle states inside the optimization model.
- Modeling and validation: we used Mixed Integer Programming (MIP) to solve the multi-agent routing problem. The model prescribes optimal, collision-free routes by evaluating the state of the whole fleet at once, and minimizes the global objective function (total transit time and congestion).
- Deployment and integration: the solution was delivered as a Python package with a command-line interface (CLI). It was designed for low-latency execution, to support on-demand planning and fast rerouting during shifts.
Results
The optimization engine was validated with a digital twin of the facility’s physical layout, which made it possible to compare heuristic-based routing with optimization-based routing.
- Congestion: the MIP approach resolved the bottlenecks caused by crossing conflicts between vehicles and kept a continuous flow of irregular parcels.
- Operational throughput: with the fleet’s movements optimized together, the system reached a higher utilization of the existing AGVs, with no additional hardware.
- Prescriptive agility: the planning team moved from manual, reactive adjustments to a prescriptive system that generates efficient routes in real time.
